Pumice in its powdered or dust form, is a volcanic rock that consists of highly vesicular rough textured volcanic glass, which may or may not contain crystals. It is typically light colored but, depending on the composition, can be white, cream, gray, green or black; in these last two cases, often due to the presence of iron.
Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. The unusual foamy configuration of pumice happens because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. . It is used in the cosmetic field (where it is known as pumice stone) and in the industrial washing machine (stone wash). In the building industry it is used to lighten the concrete and as acoustic and thermal insulation, both in powder and in blocks or panels; It is an approved material for green building.
It is also used as an abrasive, especially in polishes, pencil erasers, cosmetic exfoliants, and the production of stone-washed jeans.
Other uses: floriculture, absorbing and filtering for industrial oils, surface cleaning in general and mild abrasive.
