The barium chloride is the barium salt of hydrochloric acid. At room temperature it takes the form of white crystals, hygroscopic, odorless, soluble in water. At the industry level it is producted from barite ore. It is one of the most important water-soluble barium salts. It gives to the flame a typical yellow-green color.
It is used as:
reagent in analytical chemistry;
an intermediate in the production of all other barium compounds;
in the production of abrasives for the stone industry;
in electrolysis;
in water treatment.
