Cerium Oxyde

30
Oct

The Cerium oxyde is solid at room temperature and if it is really pure has a white to pale yellow color. It is odorless. The crude product, such as the one used for abrasive machining, presents a rosy color to red brick, due to the lanthanides presence and rare earth oxides. The cerium oxide is a good ionic conductor used in many applications: in the Carl Auer von Welsbach mantles for gas lamps glowing, together with oxides of thorium, lanthanum, magnesium or yttrium; It is also an important catalyst for the carbon compounds, used in self-cleaning ovens, in the walls of which is incorporated; in fuel cells with ceramic oxides (SOFC); in the polishing of glasses. The cerium oxide has largely replaced the red oxide as an abrasive; as a catalyst in the process of cracking of oil refining; added to the glass the cerium oxide allows the selective absorption of ultraviolet light;

It is also used as a catalyst in diesel engines with FAP technology.
